South Rim of the Grand Canyon Family Trip

An Approachable Adventure Above the Big Ditch

We start our trip on the Arizona Trail, which takes us through beautiful ponderosa forests on the plateau above the Grand Canyon. After two days of riding in the ponderosa forests, we’ll reach the edge of the "big ditch." On day three, a dramatic hike into the canyon offers us a new perspective of this incredible landscape.

The riding on this trip is quite gentle with very little elevation change, making it a great opportunity for families of all ages to experience singletrack. We avoid the crowds along the rim of the canyon and camp instead in more remote areas which we’ll have all to ourselves. We finish the trip with a ride along the West Rim Drive, which is closed to vehicles, giving us a chance to visit many of the classic viewpoints by bike. The rolling singletrack of the Arizona Trail is a great, approachable experience for those just getting into mountain biking.

Why Families Love the South Rim Adventure

  • Rolling Singletrack: Perfect for beginners, the South Rim portion of the Arizona Trail offers fun, non-technical riding.
  • Junior Ranger Program: Our guides help kids engage with the park's history and geology to earn their official badges.
  • Vehicle-Free Viewpoints: Enjoy the spectacular West Rim Drive without the stress of private car traffic.
  • Remote Camping: Experience the quiet of the Kaibab National Forest and the dark night skies of the canyon rim.

We will be without vehicle support during all of the singletrack sections of the ride, although it will never be too far away. Itineraries are subject to change due
to weather, road conditions, rider safety, and other factors which may affect the logistics of the adventure.

Be sure to bring everything on this list. We have carefully developed this list to ensure your comfort on the tour regardless of the weather. If you are prepared for extreme weather, it is an adventure. If you are not prepared it can be a serious problem. We recommend the layering system, including a wicking or long underwear layer, an insulating layer and a weather barrier for wind and rain. This list reflects that philosophy. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so be sure to bring all the warm clothing and rain gear listed!

HOW TO PACK: The bulk of your gear and clothing will ride in the Western Spirit support vehicle (preferably in a large duffle bag) and will not be accessible during the day.

For this trip, you will need a riding pack and optional day bag:

  • Your riding pack may be a hydration pack, but needs to carry 2-3 liters of water, rain gear, other warm clothing, and food for the day. You may be away from camp and the support vehicle all day and need to be self-sufficient.
  • A small day bag is optional and may be used to store things you’d rather not ride with, but would like to have access to during the day. This daypack will remain with the support vehicle and may not be accessible, depending on the day.
