Packing for your trip

Day 1: Lady Bird Johnson Grove and Holter Ridge

  • The famous Lady Bird Johnson Redwoods Grove is our first destination for this trip.
  • Here, we will hike the trail through these giant trees, where we will learn more about they grow and how they were saved when the National Park was formed. This is a great close-up look at these towering giants.
  • The geography of northwestern California creates unique conditions which allow these trees to grow and thrive. The proximity to the ocean makes the climate very moderate. Rainfall is very high in the winter, with up to 80 inches! All these factors combine to make this the most productive and diverse forest in the world.
  • After lunch, there will be an option to bike back to camp over Holter Ridge. The route includes a few challenging climbs rewarded with a fun downhill. We will all regroup at camp for our first Dutch Oven feast of the trip.
  • TOTAL MILEAGE: 3 - 16 miles riding, 1.5 miles hiking

Day 2: Pacific Coast, Fern Canyon, and Elk Prairie

  • Today we will get our first glimpse of the vast Pacific Ocean. We will bike straight from camp to a section of trail that links up with Davison Road.
  • This morning’s ride will take us through the forest to the dramatic bluffs above the ocean. Our destination for the day will be Gold Bluffs Beach and the beautiful Fern Canyon.
  • We will spend time on the beach, swimming and spotting sea life. Seals and pelicans are just a few of the animals we are likely to see.
  • Afterwards, we will hike Fern Canyon, a beautiful oasis with ferns growing all the way up the bluffs—imagine a tunnel of green following a beautiful stream.
  • We will return to our camp for the night at Elk Prairie, giving us a lot of chances to see the elk herd that frequents this area.
  • TOTAL MILEAGE: 8-16 miles riding, 1-2 miles hiking

Day 3: Coastal Trail Biking and the Banana Slugs

  • This morning we will make our way to the Coastal Trail. This trail runs 70 miles north and south, connecting all the sections of the Redwoods National Park.
  • Our bike ride for today starts along an old-growth forest road before narrowing down to a singletrack that runs on top of the bluffs above the sea.
  • Biking this section through giant redwoods will take us to an overlook with a great view of the vast Pacific Ocean. Keep your eyes peeled for the banana slugs that make their homes amongst these giants.
  • After enjoying the view, we will retrace our steps before shuttling to our campsite at Jedediah Smith Campground on the Smith River. Jedediah Smith was an early American pioneer, frontiersman, and mountain man. He explored the mountain west and made his way to California in 1826.
  • TOTAL MILEAGE: 9 - 15 miles riding

Day 4: Wild and Scenic Smith River Float Day

  • Float day!! After a great breakfast, we will head over to the put-in for our river trip.
  • Today we will float the Smith River, which was designated as a Wild and Scenic River in 1981. It is the only major river system in California that has never been damned. It runs free from its headwaters in the Klamath Mountains all the way to the Pacific.
  • Its crystal-clear waters will take us to the Stout Grove, home to the largest surviving trees, some of which stand over 325 ft tall.
  • We will finish our float with a few exciting stretches of Class I rapids, followed by some great swimming opportunities.
  • TOTAL MILEAGE: All day float

Day 5: Grove of the Titans and Hidden Beach

  • On our final day of the trip, we will explore the amazing Howland Hill Road by bike.
  • We will pass the upper part of the Stout Grove and continue to the Grove of the Titans. Along the way, we will see the upturned stump of one of these fallen giants and get yet another perspective on just how big these trees really are.
  • This short morning ride will take us to a very special section of the Coastal Trail for a downhill walk with great views all the way to Hidden Beach.
  • Here we will be surrounded by giant boulders, tidal pools, soft sand, and giant piles of driftwood—creating the perfect opportunity to encounter all kinds of ocean creatures, including anemones, sea stars, sea cucumbers, crabs and chitons.
  • Next, we will make our way to Lagoon Creek for lunch before we head back to Brookings.
  • TOTAL MILEAGE: 13 miles riding, 1-2 miles hiking

Be sure to bring everything on this list. We have carefully developed this list to ensure your comfort on the tour regardless of the weather. If you are prepared for extreme weather, it is an adventure. If you are not prepared it can be a serious problem. We recommend the layering system, including a wicking or long underwear layer, an insulating layer and a weather barrier for wind and rain. This list reflects that philosophy. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so be sure to bring all the warm clothing and rain gear listed!

HOW TO PACK: The bulk of your gear and clothing will ride in the Western Spirit support vehicle (preferably in a large duffle bag) and will not be accessible during the day.

For this trip, you will need a riding pack and optional day bag:

  • Your riding pack may be a hydration pack, but needs to carry 2-3 liters of water, rain gear, other warm clothing, and food for the day. You may be away from camp and the support vehicle all day and need to be self-sufficient.
  • A small day bag is optional and may be used to store things you’d rather not ride with, but would like to have access to during the day. This daypack will remain with the support vehicle and may not be accessible, depending on the day.

Food was excellent and the guides were great: friendly, knowledgeable, organized, etc. The trees and hikes were fantastic! The rides were fine for the kids and about what I'd expect for a family trip with young(ish) kids. The point of this trip was for the kids and to see big trees and those goals were met in spades. - Michael

Absolutely wonderful trip in the most majestic location. Very flexible schedule allowed to learn and enjoy the location and not just the riding. The side trips with the walks and learning were amazing and the float down the Smith river was unforgettable! The guides did an amazing job accommodating all and every need. Always engaged with the group and available. The food and service was incredible! - Dimitri
