Power Up Your Adventure: Why E-Bikes are Rewriting the Backcountry Rules
At Western Spirit, we’ve spent more than three decades guiding riders through North America’s most rugged, remote, and breathtaking landscapes. We’ve conquered the Slickrock of Moab, navigated the deep canyons of Bears Ears, and climbed the high-alpine passes of the Rockies. For years, accessing these wild places required a certain level of elite, lung-burning endurance.
But over the last few seasons, we’ve noticed a thrilling shift on the trails.
E-bikes are no longer just a trend—they are a revolution in accessibility. More and more of our guests are choosing the pedal-assist advantage, prompting us to rapidly expand our fleet and introduce dedicated E-Bike Ready itineraries.
Whether you are looking to bridge a fitness gap, extend your mileage, or simply unlock a deeper level of pure backcountry joy, here is everything you need to know about riding e-bikes with Western Spirit.
Leveling the Playing Field (and the Climbs)
The beauty of a multi-day bike trip is sharing spectacular moments with friends, partners, or family. But historically, differing fitness levels or varying comfort zones with steep climbs could make planning a group trip tricky.
Enter the e-bike. With a subtle, intuitive boost to your own pedaling power, the e-bike acts as the ultimate equalizer. Suddenly, couples with different riding paces can stay side-by-side. Friends who haven’t spent all winter training can effortlessly keep up with the group’s seasoned hammerheads. By removing the anxiety of “Can I make it up that hill?”, e-bikes let everyone focus on what really matters: the stunning desert vistas, the flowing singletrack, and the camaraderie around the campfire.
Expanding Our Horizons: E-Bike Ready Itineraries
We believe everyone should have the chance to experience deep backcountry magic. To meet the soaring demand, we have specifically tailored several of our classic tours to be incredibly e-bike friendly, while designing brand-new routes built around the capabilities of electric mountain bikes (e-MTBs).
-
The Moab Singletrack Tour (5 Days): Tackle the world’s most iconic red rock playground with a performance boost that completely transforms Moab’s famous ledgy climbs and technical Slickrock. You’ll master legendary trails like Klondike Bluffs and Navajo Rocks with total confidence, leaving you with plenty of energy to soak in the jaw-dropping canyon views.
-
The Maze in Canyonlands (5 Days): One of the most remote, rugged, and technical four-wheel-drive jeep roads in the Southwest is now open to a wider audience. The e-bike tames the steep ledges, sand, and technical doubletrack of the Orange Cliffs.
-
Bears Ears South Cultural Tour (4 Days): Perfect for beginners and history enthusiasts, this trip uses mellow dirt roads to access incredible cliff dwellings and ancient pictographs, making it an ideal debut for e-bike exploration.
A Note on Land Management: We love wild places and respect the rules that keep them wild. Because e-bike regulations vary across National Parks, BLM lands, and National Forests, we have done the heavy lifting for you. Our office staff and guides know exactly where e-bikes are permitted, ensuring our tours are always fully compliant and environmentally conscious.
The Western Spirit E-Bike Experience: Premium Gear & Daily Charging
You might be wondering: “How do you keep an e-bike charged in the middle of a remote desert or deep in the mountains?” Don’t worry—we’ve got it fully dialed. Our support vehicles are equipped with specialized backcountry charging setups to juice up your ride every single day.
Renting with Us
Our rental fleet features top-tier e-MTBs like the Specialized Turbo Levo. These are premium, full-suspension, trail ready machines that deliver an unequaled combination of ride quality, usable power, and massive range. When you rent from us, daily charging and mechanical support are entirely included.
Bringing Your Own Rig
Prefer the comfort of your own saddle? You are more than welcome to bring your own e-bike! For a nominal daily fee, we will handle your daily charging needs on any of our E-Bike Ready trips. Just remember to pack your charging cord!
More Miles, More Smiles
At the end of the day, an e-bike doesn’t do the riding for you. You still pedal, you still steer, and you still get a fantastic workout—you just go further, climb higher, and finish the day with plenty of energy left to enjoy our famous gourmet backcountry dinners.
E-bikes aren’t about taking a shortcut; they are about opening the door to wild spaces that used to feel out of reach.

E-Bike FAQ: Everything You Need to Know
-
What is the difference between Class 1,2,3?
Here is an easy chart for us all to understand the different classes of E-Bikes. Western Spirit uses & rides trails that allow Class 1

-
Can I bring an e-bike on any Western Spirit trip?

Not quite every trip, but many of them! Because we operate under strict permits across various National Parks, BLM lands, and National Forests, we have to follow local land management regulations. Look for the “E-Bike Ready”badge on our trip pages. If a route is designated E-Bike Ready, you are good to go. If you are eyeing a specific trip that doesn’t have the badge, give our office a call and we can recommend a similar, e-bike-friendly alternative!
-
What kind of e-bikes do you rent?
Our rental fleet features premium, full-suspension Specialized Turbo Levo e-MTBs. These are high-performance, trail-shredding Class 1 e-bikes (pedal-assist only, no throttle) designed specifically for technical mountain bike terrain. They offer incredibly natural power delivery, massive battery range, and top-tier suspension to keep your ride smooth and confident.
-
How do we charge the batteries in the middle of nowhere?
This is our favorite logistical magic trick! Our custom support trucks are outfitted with specialized backcountry generator and solar charging setups. Every evening at camp, our guides will get the charging station running. If you rent a bike from us, daily charging is completely handled.
-
Can I bring my own e-bike?
Absolutely! We love it when riders bring a bike they already know and love. If you bring your own e-bike, we offer our Backcountry Charging Service for $20 per day. Our support vehicles are equipped with charging capabilities and will charge your bike nightly. Just make sure to pack your personal charging cord!
-
What class of e-bike is allowed?
To comply with public land rules and ensure trail safety, we only permit Class 1 e-bikes on our tours. These are electric bicycles equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle reaches 20 mph. E-bikes with throttles (Class 2) or higher speed limits (Class 3) are not permitted on our dirt trail and backcountry routes.
-
Will I feel out of place if I’m the only one on an e-bike?
Not at all! E-bikes have become the ultimate equalizer on our trips. On any given tour, we usually have a mix of traditional mountain bikes and e-bikes. Because the pedal-assist helps balance out different climbing paces, it actually keeps the group closer together on the trail. You’ll spend less time waiting at crossroads and more time riding together as a pack.
-
Does an e-bike mean I don’t have to fitness train?
You definitely still need to train! A Class 1 e-bike only assists you while you are pedaling—it doesn’t do the work for you. You will still be navigating technical terrain, balancing over rocks, steering through sand, and getting a great cardiovascular workout. We recommend spending plenty of time in the saddle before your trip to get your leg muscles and bike handling skills ready for the backcountry.
Got more E- questions? We’re here to help! Give us a call at the office 435-259-8732 or shoot us an email biking@westernspirit.com We can’t wait to see you on the trail with or without an E-Bike.
