Packing for your trip

Day One: Geology, Fisher Towers, and a Colorado River Float

  • We begin in the Colorado River Canyon surrounded by red rocks with the La Sal Mountains high above us.
  • Our first hike takes us through fascinating ridges and drainages that beg the question—how did this amazing place come to be? Just as you begin to contemplate the layers of geology, we arrive at Fisher Towers, an iconic landmark along the Colorado River.
  • After lunch with a view, we will complete our loop, reunite with the support vehicle, and jump on our bikes for a downhill cruise to the river itself.
  • There, we meet the rafts for a fun float trip on the Colorado River to our scenic camp for the night.

Day Two: Canyonlands National Park and Mesa Arch

  • Today we travel up through time to some younger rocks high atop Canyonlands National Park.
  • The morning includes several short hikes in the Island in the Sky region of the park, including Grand View Point and the famous Mesa Arch.
  • These views are the real deal, as we stand high above both the Colorado and the Green Rivers to admire their handiwork. It is these two rivers that have carved out the canyons we see all around us.
  • Later in the afternoon, we reunite with our bikes for a fun and flowy ride to our high desert camp at Horsethief Mesa.

Day Three: Dead Horse Point State Park Trails and Vistas

  • Horses are a theme around these parts, and today’s destination is Dead Horse Point State Park. The name refers to a sad old story that probably isn't true, but you never know!
  • What is certain are the incredible views and great trails. We will begin by biking over to the State Park trails, which in turn leads us to the hike around this unique promontory.
  • Our support truck will meet us for lunch in the park, where unforgettable views greet us in every direction. A short ride or shuttle will bring us back to our camp at Horsethief Mesa, where the guides will prepare another yummy dinner to be enjoyed around the campfire.

Day Four: Slot Canyons and Petroglyph History

Our final day of adventure focuses on the incredible cultural history and hidden gems of the Moab area.

  • Following breakfast, we take a short drive to explore a hidden gem: a genuine slot canyon experience. This involves an engaging, non-technical hike that requires light scrambling as we navigate the narrow, sculpted walls carved by water and wind.
  • After emerging, we focus on ancient history with a visit to a significant petroglyph panel, allowing us to reflect on the deep connection Indigenous people have with this landscape.
  • After one last dose of red rock fun, we will finish our Moab Adventure Trip back in  town.

The trip will meet at 9:00 am MST at the Aarchway Inn, 1551 North Riverview Drive, Moab, Utah.

ENDING TIME

We will return to Moab between 2:00-3:00 PM on the last day.

Be sure to bring everything on this list. We have carefully developed this list to ensure your comfort on the tour regardless of the weather. If you are prepared for extreme weather, it is an adventure. If you are not prepared it can be a serious problem. We recommend the layering system, including a wicking or long underwear layer, an insulating layer and a weather barrier for wind and rain. This list reflects that philosophy. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so be sure to bring all the warm clothing and rain gear listed!

HOW TO PACK: The bulk of your gear and clothing will ride in the Western Spirit support vehicle (preferably in a large duffle bag) and will not be accessible during the day.

For this trip, you will need a riding pack and optional day bag:

  •  Your riding pack may be a hydration pack, but needs to carry 2-3 liters of water, rain gear, other warm clothing, and food for the day. You may be away from camp and the support vehicle all day and need to be self-sufficient.
  • A small day bag is optional and may be used to store things you’d rather not ride with, but would like to have access to during the day. This day-pack will remain with the support vehicle and may not be accessible, depending on the day.
