Packing for your trip

Day 1: Wildlife, Trails, and Fly Fishing

  • We approach this incredible mountain range from the western side, beginning with a visit to the idyllic Harriman State Park.
  • From wildflowers to wildlife, this area is off the charts! The trail system is perfect for both hiking and biking, offering a great chance to spot a moose.
  • After exploring Harriman and enjoying a plentiful lunch, we head to the Island Park area for fly fishing. This is a perfect chance to either begin learning this fun sport or show off your casting prowess.

TOTAL MILEAGE: 10 miles, afternoon fly fishing

DAY 2: Mesa Falls, Historic Rails, and River Floating

  • The coffee call will rouse you from your cozy sleeping bag to check the morning light while breakfast is served.
  • Our first stop is Mesa Falls, a thunderous waterfall near a National Forest Visitor Center. Here we will learn about the many forest creatures all around us and get to 'pet' quite a few of them –the Visitor Center has a large collection of pelts, offering the chance to 'pet' a wolf and a skunk!.
  • From here, we jump on the bikes and head down a historic rail trail that takes us along the Warm River, through trestles and over tunnels.
  • Our destination is a campsite right on the water. It’s a great place to jump in and float the gentle rapids while the guides prepare a giant bowl of guacamole to accompany fajitas with all the fixin’s.

TOTAL MILEAGE: 10 - 20 miles

Day 3: Lakeside Bike Ride and Wilderness Waterfall Hike

  • This morning, after another yummy breakfast, we head over to a remote double-track road—perfect for a cruisy bike ride between a series of lakes.
  • Grassy Lake is our destination. From here, we go north on foot to reach one of the many beautiful waterfalls that dot this region.
  • After this hike into the Wilderness—a swim is an option—while guides will whip up another amazing feast for dinner around the campfire.

TOTAL MILEAGE: 20 miles biking, 3.5 miles hiking

Day 4: Lake of the Woods and Secret Park Trails

  • Today starts with a short bike ride to Lake of the Woods, a very special place tucked into the forest where the wildflowers are usually amazing.
  • After lunch, we retrace our route before heading out on a secret hike that will take us into a whole new region.
  • While most park visitors are looking for parking spots and competing for space on crowded trails, we often have this region all to ourselves before heading back to our camp on the lake.

TOTAL MILEAGE: 6 miles hiking, 6-11 mile biking optional

Day 5: Grand Teton Views and Snake River Float

  • This morning, we head around to the south for the big reveal! We will spend the day in the shadow of the Grand Teton and Mount Moran, some of the most picturesque peaks in the West.
  • Moran is named after Thomas Moran, one of the first artists to capture this special area. He traveled on a whole series of expeditions and the paintings he produced inspired the creation of America’s best idea: the National Parks.
  • Our last adventure in the park will be to float a great section of the Snake River, before we cruise back to Jackson on one of the most scenic bike paths in the world.

Be sure to bring everything on this list. We have carefully developed this list to ensure your comfort on the tour regardless of the weather. If you are prepared for extreme weather, it is an adventure. If you are not prepared it can be a serious problem. We recommend the layering system, including a wicking or long underwear layer, an insulating layer and a weather barrier for wind and rain. This list reflects that philosophy. Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable so be sure to bring all the warm clothing and rain gear listed!

HOW TO PACK:The bulk of your gear and clothing will ride in the Western Spirit support vehicle (preferably in a large duffle bag) and will not be accessible
during the day.

For this trip, a riding pack is recommended for carrying water, snacks, rain gear, and extra layers. A small day bag is optional and may be used to store things
you’d rather not ride with, but would like to have access to during the day. This daypack will remain with the support vehicle and may not be accessible,
depending on the day.
