New Hovenweep Trip for 2010

Posted by Mark on Oct 27 2009 | Family Bike Trips, Mountain biking, Uncategorized

Wow - just got back from a recon camping trip last weekend over in the four corners area and am really excited about a new family trip we’ve got coming up for next season.

It’s going to meet in Durango, CO and explore the best of Hovenweep National Monument and Mesa Verde National Park over the course of a week.

I could go on and on about all the amazing discoveries we had, but you can read the details on our website right here;

Postcards from the edge…

Posted by Emily on Jan 28 2009 | Emily, Family Bike Trips, Mountain biking

We recently sent out postcards to all of our previous guests in our database, and we have noticed that many of our guests have moved! So, the Western Spirit Team is joining forces to update the database and get in touch with previous guests.

That’s where the story begins.

I was calling a handful of ‘return to sender’ cards on Monday. It was the last card of the day. I think it was 6pm Texas time. I said, “Your postcard was returned…have you moved?” She said, “Oh I’m so sorry, but I don’t think I’ll be able to go on a trip this year!”

Well, that happens, so I just asked for her new address so that I could update the database. She hurriedly replied, “No, see-I got pregnant last year, and now I have a 5 month old baby, and I’m going to miss out on my bike trip this year!”

You can just imagine what happened next! We proceeded to have a 20 minute conversation about babies, birth, pregnancy, and biking with babies! She told me all about her Chariot trailer. I told her how excited I was to bike around with my baby to be (due in 3 weeks or less!)

We ended the conversation with best wishes and hopes that we might see each other on a Western Spirit Family Trip in 2010. I can’t wait.

my bike commute

Posted by Emily on Dec 09 2008 | Emily, Family Bike Trips

From Emily in the office:

We’re starting to get the cold bite in the air here in Moab. The shade feels like mini ice caves…but then I burst out into the sun, the icicles melt, and I’m warm again.

I grew up in Ohio, and I had the opportunity to ride my bicycle to school. It was so much fun. I always loved the freedom of the ride. As I got older though, the ride became less interesting…and I soon turned my focus onto boys and high school football games!

I’ve been living it up in Moab for the past 6 years where my bike commute returned! What a lifestyle choice I have made. I have lived and worked in many different places where the commute was too far or dangerous. I’m so lucky to again get on my bike in the morning and ride to work.

I’m pregnant these days, and my doctor told me that I need to walk as much as possible. SO, I’ve been missing my bike ride every morning. I’m still taking every opportunity I can to ride my bike around town to run errands, but for now the bike is parked at my house when I come to work.

I’m looking forward to having this baby! Like a geek, I have researched all the different stroller combinations out there. My husband Chad and I were psyched to find on Chariot’s website that they sell a bike trailer/stroller combo that would be perfect for us! While the babe is still little, we’ll use an attachment called the ‘baby bivy’ and stroll the kid around town (it’s like an infant car seat for a bike trailer). When the babe is biggger, it’s back to biking!!!

I’m looking forward to next fall. I plan on riding the White Rim with Western Spirit, so I’ll have the Spring and Summer to get my bike legs back. BUT I’m really excited for the Summer of 2010 when me, my 1 year old, and my husband can all go on one of Western Spirit’s family trips. (I’m thinking the Redwoods.) We’ll have the opportunity to bring our bike trailer along. Chad and I will get the chance to share trail riding and camping with the little one and not have to do any of the cooking or logistics!!!

Anyway, my commute…what a hoot!

Eat to Ride, Ride to Eat

Posted by Angela on Jul 01 2008 | Angela, Family Bike Trips, Mountain biking, Road Riding

Mountain Bikers love to eat and Western Spirit Cycling takes food seriously.
We have sophisticated coolers that keep our food fresh while traveling in
the backcountry. Would you expect to have gourmet salads, lasagna, or
brownies in the backcountry? You should when you travel with us.

Our guides are talented chefs and they have mastered the art of Dutch Oven
cooking. Don’t expect to lose weight when you come on a bike tour with Western Spirit.

We are also proud to be sponsored by Clif Bar and Bear Naked. Clif Bar has
been nurturing us with their organic goodness for years and we are
incredibly grateful. Bear Naked makes the best granola you have ever
tasted.

If you like to eat as much as you like to ride your bike a tour with Western Spirit should be on your short list of upcoming vacations.

Consider a Green Mountain Bike Vacation

Posted by Angela on Jun 30 2008 | Angela, Family Bike Trips, Mountain biking, Trip Report

We all want to do our part to have less of an impact on the environment.
One way in which we can do that is to travel with respect for the
environment and choose a green vacation.

Western Spirit Cycling trips are supported by one vehicle that carries all
of the food and equipment to support thirteen guests and two guides. We
practice Leave No Trace principles when traveling in the backcountry and
educate our guests on how to do the same.

The principles of Leave No Trace are Plan Ahead and Prepare, Travel and Camp
on Durable Surfaces, Dispose of Waste Properly, Leave What You Find,
Minimize Campfire Impacts, Respect Wildlife, Be Considerate of Other
Visitors. To learn more about Leave No Trace visit their website .

After spending a week sleeping outside under the stars and pedaling your
bicycle thru aspens or canyons you can’t help but have a greater
appreciation for the wilderness.

The Perfect Family Trip

Posted by Angela on Jun 23 2008 | Angela, Family Bike Trips, Mountain biking, Trip Report

I spent the last week in California guiding a Redwoods National Park family mountain bike trip . In my mind, this is the perfect family summer vacation. It
allows the family to play together without worrying about the logistics.
Your bike guides are also excellent chefs. They prepare food for even the
pickiest of kids (or adults). The bike trip is structured so the family
bikes together in the morning and the parents do a more challenging ride in
the afternoon. There are also fun hikes and time spent at the beach. Our
family trips include an extra guide so there is more flexibility in
entertaining both the adults and the kids.

The Redwoods is a magical area of the country. The temperatures were cool
and pleasant and the memories of both kids and adults playing hopscotch,
Frisbee, and Uno makes it difficult to be back in the office this week.

Stay tuned for a picture of one of the waterfalls.
